Trauma Therapy in Richmond Hill, ON

Online & In-Person

If past experiences are continuing to affect how you feel, think, or connect with others, trauma therapy in Richmond Hill can provide a space to better understand what you’re experiencing.

What Is Trauma, and How Does It Show Up?

Trauma is the emotional and psychological impact that can follow a distressing, overwhelming, or difficult experience.

Trauma can look different for everyone and may continue to affect how you understand yourself, navigate relationships, or respond to certain situations long after the experience has passed.

Some experiences that may continue to influence your life include:

●      Childhood trauma and difficult early experiences

●      Relationship or betrayal trauma

●      Loss and grief

●      Accidents or other distressing experiences

●      Difficulty trusting others

●      Challenges setting boundaries

●      Feeling emotionally unsafe in relationships

●      Repeating relationship patterns or conflicts

●      Feeling stuck in patterns that you want to change

●      Low self-esteem or a persistent inner critic

You don't have to have everything figured out before starting therapy. A first conversation can be an opportunity to explore what you're experiencing and what kind of support may be helpful.

How Trauma Therapy Helps

Healing begins with understanding.

Therapy can provide a safe and supportive space to unpack things from the past, understand yourself more deeply, and explore how your experiences may be shaping your present.

Together, we can connect the dots between your past and present and explore the patterns that may no longer be serving you.

Depending on your needs and goals, therapy may help you:

● Better understand your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours

● Explore experiences from your past

● Recognize patterns in your relationships

● Build greater self-awareness

● Establish and strengthen boundaries

● Work through emotional distress

● Develop a deeper understanding of your needs

● Move toward the person you want to be

Therapy isn't about changing who you are. It's about creating space to understand yourself, challenge patterns that no longer serve you, and move forward with greater confidence and self-awareness.

Our Approach to Trauma Counselling

There isn't one approach that works for everyone.

At Sow and Grow Therapy, therapy is tailored specifically to you and your circumstances. Veronica brings a thoughtful, relational, and evidence-based approach to therapy, drawing from her training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Emotion-Focused Therapy.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can help you explore the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.

Together, you can begin to identify patterns that may be keeping you stuck and consider new ways of responding.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) focuses on developing awareness of your experiences while helping you move toward the values and goals that matter to you.

Rather than simply trying to get rid of difficult thoughts or feelings, ACT can help you develop a different relationship with them.

Emotion-Focused Therapy

Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) provides space to understand and work with your emotions rather than simply pushing them aside.

Through greater emotional awareness and understanding, you can begin to explore what your emotions may be communicating and what you need moving forward.

A Collaborative Approach

Therapy is not something that happens to you. It's something we work through together.

Veronica's approach is grounded in curiosity, compassion, and collaboration. Your experiences, goals, and needs guide the work.

Not sure if trauma therapy is right for you? Book a free 15-minute phone consultation, and we can explore whether we're a good fit.

What to Expect in Your First Trauma Therapy Session

If you'd like to connect before booking, you can start with a free 15-minute phone consultation. It's a chance to ask questions and see whether we're a good fit.

The first session is 60 minutes long and serves as an initial intake.

It's a space for us to begin building a therapeutic relationship, where Veronica takes time to deeply listen to your story, understand what's bringing you to therapy, and explore what support might look like moving forward.

She takes a reflective, listening-based approach to get a fuller picture of your experiences, challenges, and goals.

You don't need to know exactly what you want from therapy before you arrive. You can use this time to talk about what you'd like support with and what you hope therapy can help you work toward.

The 60-minute initial intake is $180.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if trauma therapy is right for me?

If experiences from your past are affecting how you think, feel, relate to others, or move through your everyday life, trauma therapy may be a space to explore what's happening. You don't need to have everything figured out before reaching out. A free consultation can give you the opportunity to see whether therapy feels like the right fit for you.

What is the difference between trauma and PTSD?

Trauma refers to the emotional and psychological impact of a distressing or overwhelming experience. PTSD, or post-traumatic stress disorder, is a specific mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Not everyone who experiences trauma develops PTSD, and you don't need a PTSD diagnosis to seek support for the effects of difficult experiences.

Can trauma affect your relationships?

Yes. Past experiences can influence how you connect with others, communicate, set boundaries, and build trust. You may notice recurring relationship patterns, difficulty with vulnerability, or challenges feeling emotionally safe with others. Therapy can provide a space to explore these patterns.

How long does trauma therapy take?

There isn't a set timeline for trauma therapy. The length of therapy can vary depending on the person and their experiences. Your therapist can work with you to determine the pace and approach that feels appropriate for you.
